The Prodigal Daughter

I don't mind telling you that I am feeling rather chuffed with myself, and very festive to boot.  I decided for Christmas this year I would buy a gift for a friend from The Prodigal Daughter.  Until Christmas The Prodigal Daughter have a pop-up shop at 158 Cuba Street, Wellington.  This pop-up shop is opposite and along a bit from Floriditas, and a couple of doors down from the Olive Cafe.

In case you can't quite read the labels on what I have in this little treasure box, here they are:
Modena Balsamic vinegar spray
Extra virgin olive oil porcini mix
Lumaconi pasta shells
Black olive paste
Sun-dried tomatoes
Grilled Artichokes
Rhubarb and raspberry jam

I can't wait to give my friend her Christmas gift box, I'm sure she will love it.

I thought I had better buy some of these for myself, you know, just for research purposes of course!  My favourite so far is the black olive paste.  I spread some on puff pastry sheets and grated over some Parmesan cheese, then cut into wedges and rolled like croissants.  These cooked in the oven at 180C in 15-20mins.  Fantastic finger food for the festive season.  I also made a sweet version on another sheet of puff pastry wedges, with a square of chocolate and hey presto, pain au chocolat.  If you have the time you can make these from scratch from Ruth Pretty's savoury version recipe - http://tiny.cc/sjyv7

Also included in link above from The DomPost Your Weekend on 10th Dec '11, are Devils on Horseback - very Christmassy indeed.

Kirkcaldie & Stains Christmas shop

The Kirkcaldies & Stains Christmas shop is open, on the second floor of the main shop.  Also now on display at Kirkcaldies are the adorable Christmas window displays.  These can be seen from the Lambton Quay shop front windows, see below for one of them.

Beautiful reindeer, too good for outside
the peppermint lollipop tree
all things sparkly and glittery
magic Santa and reindeer sled
just one of the shop front displays of Santas little helpers.  This photo doesn't do it justice, as you really need to see it in person and for the marionette moving magic.

Peonies

We bought some of my favourite flowers, Peonies from Moore Wilson's, and have shown them in all their glory here.
Well worth the $14.95 for the three blooms, which lasted a couple of weeks.

Italian Festival favs

We are just back from the Italian Festival at the Westpac Stadium.  Thoroughly enjoyed the best little Italian festival in NZ.
We bought a fresh baguette from Bordeaux Bakery, Prosciutto from La Bella Italia and Genovese Foods pesto for lunch at home.  We also bought Gusto Cioccolato for the True Italian hot chocolate.  Drank far too much Caffe L'affare coffee and were charmed by many Italians of all ages.
We were also entertained by the amazing Sbandieratori Flag Wavers from Italy.

gorgeous night lights from ECC Lighting & Furniture
The kind of dog I would like to own, also from ECC Lighting & Furniture

Ancestral

What a palava. Good grief, you'd think I was suggesting we go out to one of those places that were in fashion a while ago now, where you had to cook your own dinner on hot plates provided. No, none of that, I had recommended we go to Ancestral. A swanky new Chinese fine dining experience recently opened up on Courtenay Place, to high acclaim. It seems my dining partner had got stuck in his head that it would be no better than a Chinese takeaway, only more expensive and perhaps with some grasshoppers thrown in for good measure.

No, this would not be An Idiot Abroad dining experience, and I should also clarify, that my dinner date is not an Idiot. But, it did take some persuading early on, to just get him in the door. Once in the door, I'm very happy to say, he was suitably impressed and made great friends with the Invernesian at the front desk. I'm not so sure the waitress will be keen to be friends however.  After our waitress dutifully explained the menu we told her we were going to completely disregard her advice. The menu at Ancestral is split into six courses of increasing size and spicyness, and another for sweets.  We ordered straight from the fourth course then another from the sixth. Of course, our waitress was unphased by our approach, and commended us on our choices.

Our choices were the duck slow roasted for 20 hours with 13 spices. Divinely crispy, not too fatty and packed full of flavour. We ordered sides of fluffy steamed jasmine rice and Chinese greens with sesame oil and garlic. The bok choy wasn't available, but we were assured the replacement of choy sum was even better, and not so stringy. Oh, my, I'm a convert.

The glassed garden in the centre of the building is a beautiful fresh air addition to a high street dining experience. Not only does it bring in natural light, but it is also a haven for the smokers and diners not worried by the smoke or the grill. I can assure you, there were no insects being skewered and grilled, nor was there any whole carcasses being hung to dry. Despite being transported to another world with our meal, as our waitress quite aptly put, we are still in Wellington after all and this is fine dining.

So, my dining partner now relaxed, even after reading the wine list prices, we can get on and enjoy the duck and sides. And enjoy we did. The dish was intended to share, which was a more enjoyable dining experience otherwise we'd fall into our normal habit of competitive ordering. Now you might think why on earth would you need 13 spices and 20 hours to cook a duck . Of course, the 20 hours had concluded by the time of ordering, unlike the more expensive whole de-boned duck to share amongst five diners, which does require advance notice. The spices of the duck dish did not compete for attention but did utterly cut through any fattiness and render the bird utterly tender and moist.

Temuera Morrison and possy were at the table next to ours. I did manage to prevent my partner from taking photos of him and asking for his autograph. I would have told you about the star attraction at the time of our dining, but I don't believe in broadcasting where the celebrities are at the time. I believe they deserve to relax and enjoy their precious privacy when with family or friends. I understand this is a reason celebrities enjoy their time in NZ, that they are afforded some anonymity. Unless, of course, you're married to royalty. The lesson here perhaps, is be nice to the bouncers & staff!

So, back to our meal. The duck was delicious, and by the end of the dish we were fighting over the last morsel. Which, as it turned out, was completely unnecessary. As to come was an impressive tray (not just a dish) of wagyu beef, crispy salad and a pastry brush of red rice vinegar and rock sugar reduction. I can't imagine anyone not being wowed by this dish. That is a strong statement to make. I don't do it lightly. I imagine even vegetarians would approve of the treatment these impressive beasts receive in their happy lives on the rolling hills of Gisborne. Typically the dedicated Wagyu farmers administer massaging of these beasts throughout their days grazing to allow the fat to be dispersed amongst the muscle. The result is such an amazing tenderness and flavour that I declare it is the best beef we have ever enjoyed. I can't imagine it being improved on. However, I am happy to be proven wrong of course.

Accompanying the wagyu beef was a light salad of crispy green apple marinated in lime and chilli, baby celery, spring onion and ginger. We disregarded proper protocol of keeping the rice in the rice bowl, just so we could soak up the last of the pepper sauce left after the wagyu had gone. Had we a secluded room, we may have thrown caution to the wind, and licked the plate clean. One of us was sorely tempted to do this, and with the attention on our neighbour, we may just have gotten away with that too!

To drink I went for a Beefeater 24 gin and tonic, not persuaded to mix sake and gin in a cocktail. Maybe next time. My partner had a glass of 2008 Central Otago Pisa Range Estate Black Poplar Pinot Noir.

On departing, my partner thoroughly star struck and giddy, we joked with our waitress that we hadn't had our bill sorted, so we thought we'd just do a runner! She was rather taken aback, perhaps she hadn't experienced our sort of humour and wasn't quite sure how to answer that. Now, to clarify, we don't do runners, or recommend it, unless you've been very friendly with the bouncer!

Halloween Treats

We were never really into celebrating Halloween.  Then, when we moved into our home we were inundated with trick or treaters for the first Halloween.  At that stage we didn't have children and didn't really know what to do with all these trick or treaters arriving at our door.  We soon ran out of treats and still the treaters came.  So, in desperation we started to give them money, just small coins, but still the precedent was set.

So, the next year we got more organised and had treats aplenty.  And every year after that we have got more and more into the Halloween celebrations.

This year the DH has refused to carve anymore pumpkins.  So, sadly this will be our last carved pumpkin:

This was our treats tray from last year:

These are our treats for this years little Halloween monsters:
Ginger Bread Ghosts
The idea for these ghosts came from the Chelsea website.  See below for the recipe:

Ginger Bread Ghosts
Ingredients:

125g butter, at room temperature
½ cup (100g) firmly packed brown sugar
½ cup (125ml) golden syrup
1 egg yolk
2½ cups (375g) plain flour
1 tablespoon ground ginger
1 teaspoon mixed spice
1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
Plain flour, to dust

Royal icing:
1 egg white
1 cup (150g) icing sugar, sifted
½ teaspoon lemon juice

Method:
Preheat oven to 180°C conventional (160°C fan forced).

Line 2 oven trays with baking paper.

Use an electric beater to beat the butter and brown sugar in a bowl until pale and creamy.

Add golden syrup and egg yolk and beat until combined.

Sift the flour, ginger, mixed spice and bicarbonate of soda and mix to a dough.

Turn onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth.

Roll dough between two sheets of baking paper to 5mm thickness.

Refrigerate for 30 minutes (not entirely necessary).

Use a 9cm gingerbread man or angel cutter to cut out shapes.

Place on trays about 5cm apart.

Repeat with any excess dough.

Bake in oven for 10 minutes or until brown. Cool on oven tray.

Royal Icing Method:

Place egg white in a clean, dry bowl. Use an electric beater to beat until soft peaks form.

Add lemon juice (which makes the icing glossy and less sickly sweet) and gradually add icing sugar. Beat until stiff peaks form.

Place Royal Icing into small plastic bag. Cut a small hole in a corner of bag. Pipe icing over gingerbread men or angels* to create mummies or ghosts.

* I used a Christmas cookie cutter I already had, that is an angel.  But, I thought they passed for ghosts quite nicely.  I used silver cachous for the eyes.

Other good websites to get ideas for Halloween are:
Martha Stewart

and

Nigella Lawson

Happy trick or treating.

And, if you aren't into Halloween and don't want to be trick or treated, then put a sign on your door or gate saying "No trick or treats here please".

Will your post arrive in time?

Christmas is coming.  There is no point denying it any longer.  Kirkcaldie & Stains Christmas shop is open and it won't be long before we will hear Christmas carols in the shops.

If you have family and friends overseas, then you may like to know about the changes for posting Christmas cards to arrive in time.

NZ Post no longer gives the option of sending cards by International Economy.  International Economy is only available for parcels.  Your only option to send cards overseas is by International Par Avion Air.  Of course, all mail gets sent by air these days.  It has been a long time since you had the option of post by sea or air.

So, what does this mean for the cost of sending a medium sized card overseas:
To Australia & South Pacific is $1.90
The rest of the world is $2.40

For posting Christmas cards it is worthwhile to keep in mind, it is the size of the envelope that determines the price of the postage, not the weight of the envelope.  This is different from how the postal prices works in the UK, for example.  In the UK you can choose between first and second class posting, and then postal costs are determined on the weight.

So, before you buy a pack of Christmas cards,  you may like to consider the size of the envelope and maybe buy the charity packs.  The charity pack of Christmas cards donate a portion of the sale proceeds to a named charity.

Another point to note, is the dates the NZPO advise for posting Christmas cards to arrive in time for Christmas in the UK, Europe & North America is 2nd December.  Of course, NZPO cannot guarantee your post will reach its destination within the delivery target.  Last Christmas the postal delivery for the UK was brought to a stand still as the heavy snow stopped deliveries.  In previous years, postal strikes by UK Postal Union saw sacks of mail undelivered by Christmas.

So, the good news is that you don't need to get organised for sending Christmas cards quite so early this year.

But don't leave it too long, I understand that next week will be the last delivery most retail shops will receive before Christmas.  And if you go shopping in the weekend, be prepared for driving, parking and shopping in general to take a bit longer.  Of course, you could choose to shop online, but that is another blog to come!

Below are outlines for the letter/card rates from NZPO:

The cost to send by International Air depends on the destination, weight and size of documents.
SizeMax dimensions per letter (height x length)Max weight per letterMax thickness per letterRequired postage per letter for Australia and South PacificRequired postage per letter for Rest of the World
